A Lineage of Learning
Â
Ethan J. Abraham is an IBJJF brown belt, filmmaker, and lifelong student of Jiu-Jitsu with 16 years on the mats and 10 years of teaching experience.
His development has been shaped by some of the most respected names in the Martial Art: he earned his youth belts under Professor Caio Terra from 2012 to 2015 and continued his youth progression under Professor Andre Galvao.
Today he trains and earns his adult belts under Professor Osvaldo Augusto Moizinho, widely known as "Queixinho." Learning directly from world champions and legends of the art has given Ethan a rare perspective — one built on endurance, precision, patience, and respect for the lineage he now passes forward.
The History of The Gentle Art
Â
Ethan has learned that Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting, positional control, and submissions. The term “Jiu-Jitsu” is commonly translated from Japanese as “gentle art,” reflecting the idea of using technique, timing, and leverage rather than relying only on strength. Its history can be traced to the martial traditions of feudal Japan, where samurai developed methods of fighting when weapons were unavailable or ineffective.
In the late nineteenth century, Jigoro Kano adapted techniques from traditional Jujutsu to create Judo, emphasizing safe practice, throwing, and grappling. Judo later spread internationally, including to Brazil, where practitioners such as Carlos and Hélio Gracie helped develop Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Today, Jiu-Jitsu is practiced worldwide for competition, mixed martial arts, self-defense, physical fitness, and personal development, while continuing to evolve through modern training and competition.
The greatest thing about Jiu Jitsu however is how it helps so many people find balance in their own lives. It’s called “The Gentle Art” for a reason as it not only helps you take your body mechanics to a whole new level but also control that development in a proper way. Ethan has been fortunate enough to have a lot of time to invest in his training and really find an avenue where he could bring something unique when it comes to that control and development.
The Importance of Development
Â
Ethan walked onto the mats for the first time back in 2009 when he was only 5 years old. At first it was just a fun environment to put all of his energy and challenge himself (especially since he was the smallest and youngest one on the mats). But a few years later, he would compete and get 3rd place (bronze) at the Arizona State Championship. This ignited his desire for competition and training.
But as the years went on, he learned there was more to Jiu Jitsu then competition and training. There's a great sense of development that can be earned from Jiu Jitsu when a kid grows up in it. Ethan saw first hand how he slowly started becoming more responsible, mature, capable with his body, and most of all, confident. This confidence fed into his coaching as he would go on to coach at the age of 11 years old all the way to present day.
To this day, he still coaches and helps the youth discover themselves through Jiu Jitsu. That's why this online training is so important. Ethan wants all the kids who watch these videos and join the jiu jitsu journey to slowly discover their endurance, and maturity through a highly effective martial art. Jiu Jitsu is more than just a combat art... it's a life changing experience that every kid should experience and Ethan is a living example of that. A living example that is now passing on his knowledge to the next generation.
